Enjoying the Journey
Sthira Sukham Asanam
Asana is a steady, comfortable posture.
Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, II.46
We are often asked to think about our physical yoga practice as a metaphor for our lives. This symbolism is perhaps most effective when we consider the definition of a posture as one that is steady as well as comfortable, that requires both effort and ease.
How often in our lives do we veer too much to one of these extremes? Sometimes we push ourselves so hard that we forget to take time to enjoy the journey.
More often than not, this leads to stress, sleeplessness, anxiety, and an overall lack of balance. On the flip side of that, we sometimes become so complacent in our lives that we exert no effort at all to change that which is not serving us. This can lead to a general sense of malaise, depression, and listlessness. When we are able to find balance between effort and ease, knowing when to push ourselves just enough and learning when to let go, we are able to be active participants as well as conscious observers of our lives. Like the upcoming Spring season when Winter’s frost melts away, but Summer’s heat has yet to become overbearing, may we too find this harmony within ourselves. It may begin in our asana practice, but with time this balance is bound to seep into every aspect of our lives.
