Internal Awareness & Love: Focus of the Month

– Internal Awareness & Love

“May I be happy. May I be well. May I be safe. May I be peaceful and at ease… May you be happy. May you be well. May you be safe.

May you be peaceful and at ease.”

-Metta Meditation / Loving-kindness Meditation Mantra

Yoga is a journey of self-realization: connecting with the True Self through conscious breath, movement, mantra, and presence. It is truly a practice that allows us to experience unparalleled internal awareness. Each time we step into the studio or onto our mat, we are gifted with the opportunity to connect to the deepest and most compassionate levels of ourselves.

While we awaken to a sense of self-love, respect, and compassion, it stands to reason that we begin to direct some of this love outward to others.Perhaps we share some energy with others in our yoga class, friends and loved ones outside of the studio, or even with those to whom we have become distant. The practice of loving-kindness suggests that, once this outpouring of love for ourselves and those close to us becomes solidified, we should even direct this same mantra to those with whom we have a difficult relationship.

Yoga is not about creating a bubble of love and light around ourselves, separating us from the often harsh realities of the outside world. Though many of us may get stuck within this bubble when we begin the process of self-realization, it is important to continue sharing this awareness, this energy with others, even those who may never understand the depth of these practices. Each time we experience gratitude for yoga in our lives, let us all make a conscious effort to spread these blessings with everyone without exception, without prejudice, without personal motive. This, after all, is the true work of the yogi.
